A Day Will Come

Happy World Poetry Day everyone! This is a poem written in hope of a better day than today in the future — and what to do in the meantime.

One midwinter it’ll dawn indigo at midnight
The land will be transformed in that strange light
As pollutant glares are dimmed.

On this day the bells across the country
Will ring as they do for weddings
And we will run to the village green
To dance in the rhythm of the Catherine wheel.

Until that day, let us offer a hand to our neighbours
As they lug a piano up the stairs.
Let us give up our seat on the bus
Share our Malteasers
Give our friend a turn on the Nintendo
And donate a kidney if the other works.
Let us give our sand castles to the sea.
Let us be good to one another
And set our house in order
Before we tell others to tidy theirs.

And of course I am a hypocrite
Who gets snappy when late for the train
And doesn’t know when to shut his mouth
But let’s not shy away from saying what is right
Because it’s inconvenient or against current trends.

For if we do all this, the day will come
When the thunder speaks in our native tongue
And teaches us to flash in brilliance
Before dissolving as a growl beyond the horizon
And on to undiscovered skies.
